ABYSSAL AI at VISUM 2019

Abyssal AI, our research department, was at the industry day of VISUM 2019, a summer school which gathers researchers from academia and industry interested in computer vision and machine intelligence.

We shared the results of our research projects—Structure Inspection and Underwater SLAM-NET System—where we are using artificial intelligence to improve the efficiency of subsea operations. Therefore we showed how to:

> Automatically detect structure integrity threats and other entities (i.e. fish) on subsea videos;

> Reconstruct the surrounding 3D environment and estimate the movement of a subsea vehicle using a single video camera.

The discussion opened doors to great feedback and networking with all the participants, making it worth to work on a Saturday! Thank you VISUM for the invitation, we hope to see you next year!

Abyssal strengthens its team by appointing Joe Little to its Advisory Board

Abyssal, a software engineering company that provides cutting-edge 3D Visualization, Simulation and Digitalization capabilities for subsea operations, announced today that Joe Little accepted to support the company on a business and strategic level.

Joe has more than 30 years in the oil and gas sector around the globe, the past 13 of which have been spent working with VCs, academics, major research firms, SMEs and IT industry leaders in researching and educating executives and senior level leaders in the value and impact of emerging technologies such as immersive 3D, AR/VR, advanced visualization techniques, robotics and the future of work at BP. His work has been presented at Stanford University, MIT and IE Business School as well as appearing in books such as “Learning in 3D”.

”It is a privilege to have Joe helping us achieve the next stage of our journey. His expertise and vision will be crucial to accelerate our business roadmap and to provide “Vision in Depth” to our customers”, said Rafael Simão, Abyssal CEO.

“We have no doubt that Joe’s experience in solving business problems with real innovative digital solutions will help us refine our technology and product roadmap” said Manuel Parente, Abyssal CTO. “Joe’s view and vision are 100{2beb0a36b303351603b1ea91ff18d19c17aee5e2ba0d5fe7ffa4fdb034433a0f} aligned with Abyssal’s “Future-Proof Fit-for-Purpose” approach”.

Regarding his appointment, Joe Little said:

“Abyssal is an exciting company and one that has impressed me over the past 3 years in developing, what I believe, to be the most complete subsea Digital Twin platform on the market. I look forward to working with Abyssal in the next stage of their journey”.

Abyssal granted with one-year partnership contract with Van Oord

Van Oord launched its Innovation Challenge for the first time this year as part of the celebrations marking its 150th anniversary. The company views the Innovation Challenge as a quest to enter into new partnerships with companies that are making vital contributions to addressing society’s problems, for example, the reduction of carbon emissions, energy storage or digitalization.

Van Oord has spent the past few months helping eight entrepreneurs develop a professional business plan. It was part of the Van Oord Innovation Challenge, a competition for start-ups and scale-ups that are eager to work on building a better future.

During the symposium, Abyssal had the opportunity to present its innovation to the audience. Abyssal was granted with a one-year partnership contract with Van Oord.

We are both humbled and very eager to start this journey with “Royal” Van Oord. We share the same vision of making a smarter use of Digital Technologies to achieve a more sustainable future. — Luís Almeida and Manuel Parente

Abyssal Simulator Launch

Abyssal Simulator is a next generation 3D rendering engine with physics simulation, seamlessly integrated with a geographical information system, allowing the use of virtual scenarios driven by real world information.

“Abyssal Simulator was created to allow the use of real-world based scenarios, vehicles, and accurate object and tools. This means that accurate geographical positions, sizes, weights and hydrodynamic behaviour untaps the potential of simulation increasing the number of applications”, Manuel Parente, CTO

Users can perform Virtual System Integration Tests while planning procedures, determine the feasibility of subsea tooling procedures, and perform accessibility and maneuverability studies.

ROV pilots and crew can train procedures in each of the simulation scenarios, improving operational efficiency.

Engineers can perform constructability reviews and identify opportunities for increased efficiency.

“Abyssal Simulator was developed with the purpose to be used by anyone and anywhere. For example, training location is no longer a barrier because both pilots and engineers can use it onshore or offshore. Additionally, and because of its enhanced usability, we can place in the hand of engineers the capability to run infinite number of scenarios when performing design reviews, constructability reviews or Virtual System Integration Testing” Rafael Simão, CEO
